General - girl and parrot hiding in tree

A girl who's father was in a war and he painted in the shed out back. She had to be quiet when he was home. Her mother made her be quiet. When we was a teenager about 15 or 16 or father tried to kill her and choked her. Her mother took her and moved to another school district. She also bought her daughter a parrot who became her constant companion when she was at home. At school a boy became interested in her and tried his very best to befriend her. He gave her a card filled with glittery stars to cheer her up. One day her father showed up and tried to hurt her again. Her school mate helped her hid but her father tracked her into a set of nearby woods. Her parrot was with her while she hid in a tree hollow buried under some leaves. Her guy friend found her by whistling bird calls to her that her and her parrot answered. it turned out that her father had some trauma from the war that he was in an his daughter looked like a girl that he accidently killed and that was the reason he went skitzo.

I thought the title was Hide and seek or hide or die. I'm not sure. please help me find it
