This book is about a Roman Proconsul(?) governing one of the provinces on the Iberian peninsula. He loves his family and country, but firmly believes that his views and are the only right and valid ones. He is so blind to other views, that he allows his beloved daughter to be killed in front of his eyes instead of relenting. There is a great battle in front of the walls with the barberians. He writes/dictates his memoires in his beautiful gardens in the Province.

I think the book won one of the major book prizes. I think it might have been a Portuguese author.  I think it has 'Garden' in the title.
