I am trying to find the name or author of this book that I read when I was around 10 or so it must be from the eighties or ninties. I have been struggling to remember all the details and searching online but I can't find it! HELP! The story is about a young girl who is awkward and not lovely under appreciated by those whom she lives with. Somehow she ends up living underground with the fey, I believe it is because they kidnapped a young boy whom she cared for and she traded herself or something like that. Or she had to undertake a years service to free him. Most of the other humans that live there cannot handle the oppressive weight of the world above them and so they take some kind of drug/ambrosia provided by the fae to deal with the stress. The lead character refuses though and struggles under this weight on her own. She is trained by the fae to be a beautiful servant and gradually both her appearance and manner changes as she comes to reflect this. I think they offer to let her stay at the end and she refuses coming back up to the surface after some kind of party. When she meets the people she left behind they hardly recognize her she is so changed.
That's all i have hopefully someone knows which book this is and can help

The Perilous Gard by Elziabeth Marie Pope. Still in print.

"The Perilous Gard takes place in England during the 1500s. The lead character, Kate Sutton, is a lady-in-waiting for Queen Elizabeth I of England when she is still a princess. Her sister, Alicia, inadvertently gets her exiled to a castle named Elvenwood Hall, also known as The Perilous Gard, where she finds that the daughter of Sir Geoffrey Heron, the master of the hall, vanished under mysterious circumstances that implicate his brother, Christopher Heron. She also finds that the local villagers fear the fairy folk who live under the hill and think they may be kidnapping children. Kate stumbles into the underground fairy world where she faces several challenges, which include saving herself and Christopher, who chose to put himself forward as king of the Land. Kate though at the end saves him and Christopher takes Cecily to London to live with his sister Jenny (Jennifer). When Christopher comes back he proposes to Kate, and she accepts. Kate is granted freedom when Queen Elizabeth I ascends the throne."
