O hairy saint of the North,
I was actually going to say 'tailpipe' at first, but at length it occurred to me that that would mean you were sucking in carbon monoxide. I thought that would not have been your intention. However, I am now having second thoughts about that as well. I am hereby changing my mind: Go outside and start sucking that car off instanter, with my compliments. |

LARA---
Quite welcome, old girl ! Started a fresh argument between me and the Hairy One ! Never too many of those, what ! Rather a hobby with me ! Jolly fun ! Sorry about your floorboards---take care when you drive in wet weather. Unless of course you meant your house. Also, please don't mind my calling you 'old girl.' It is my understanding of the British that they consider this a term of endearment unrelated to age, and that is how I meant it.

Dear Lara,
Actually it's been at least a year (which is to say 100 books ago) since I read any Wodehouse. I have always found language to be very contagious. When I was little, my sister and mother and I would take turns at reading aloud through various books; when we were on Lois Lenski, we immediately began talking like poor Southerners of half a century ago. I adore Wodehouse and I guess the mere mention of him is enough to send me into a relapse. You're probably lucky I didn't call you "old bean" or even "old flea."

YOU SAID SO.
Of course it is only fair to admit that you later retracted the statement. I had forgotten about the retraction. My apologies.

Dear Boss,
In the interest of excruciating fairness I must draw your attention to posting number 150 on this thread.

You bloody did so !
It was on the Who would you invite to lunch ? thread, which is No. 1567.
Baensidhe posted a selection of persons and literature including romances, sci-fi, fantasy, Lord of the Rings, Sherlock Holmes, Peter Wimsey, Hercule Poirot, Jeeves and Wooster. That was post number 1567.155.
You replied, and I quote, "Sherlock Holmes GOOD. Everyone else BAD."
That looked like it meant Jeeves and Wooster. I expressed my horror at this exhibition of dreadful taste, and you clarified your position on the subject, and I was much relieved.
When the topic arose again in the course of my post to this thread, I had forgotten about the retraction. I said so and apologized, politely I thought, and all I got in return was outright disbelief and name-calling. Look for yourself if you still don't believe me. This is why El Magnifico ! is the man and you are not.

IF WOTAN LIVED IN THE HOOD:
Dear Blue,
Here's my fantasy answer to post number 2524.152. I did it to blow off steam and thought you'd get a kick out of it. How'd I do ?
Oh hayill no ! "No you di-in't" is right ! No you di-in't just dis me like that ! I'm 'bout to go ghetto fabulous on yo' a--! Y'all so smug, like you da cat who ate the canary. Frontin' in yo' ole Lincoln Town Car like you da ish; you cou'in't pick up a hooker in dat sorry old beater. How you really gon' pretend you ain't say dat about Wodehouse ? You can't even admit you really said it; you got to be talkin' smack about me and my intellect. You Mistah Playa on the Forum, but I see through dat. You a scrub. You lame. You just think you all dat an' a Big Mac. Huh ? What that ? What you say? Ad hominem ? So's you ol' man !
In the last line I used "you" rather than "yo" to mean "your," which I believe is a correct alternative, especially when used before the vowel in question. "Yo" of course is also a common exclamation and occasionally can mean "you." At least that is my understanding.
Yours in scholarship,
MelissaKD
